Introduction

History of Sorvikivi was started in the garage of the founders by making articles of soap stone and marble. Investigation of granite's possibilities was started in 1987 and the first stone balls were made in 1989. Company's manufacturing facilities was built in 1992, when also the first stone ball machine was completed. Production was transferred to the current 700 square meter's premises in 1998. At the same time, was built a new and bigger stone ball machine, which is able to make even a three meters of diameter granite balls. The founders of the company Eero and Kaarina Vainikka are still leading the operation. Sorvikivi employs six persons.

The company opened its own quarry at Savitaipale in 2004 and founded Brown Hill Granite Oy for quarry operations. Globally unique stone for the stone balls comes from this quarry.

Preparing of highly quality granite balls is technically very challenging process. Spectrolite ball shown below has rolled ten years at the Tampereen Kivimuseo.
